Every human being without water can only survive about 100
hours, but there is one creature that has the capacity to survive without water
for decades, this flexible one-millimeter animal can survive in the hottest and
coldest environments on Earth, and it can even withstand dramatic radiation
levels and even the vacuum of outer space, this is really amazing.
This is the tardigrade has the appearance of an 8 legged
gummy bear and is one of the sophisticatedly strongest creatures on Earth for
the following reasons
First, most organisms need water to allow metabolism to
occur, but tardigrades virtually circumvent this restriction through a
restricted process called anhydrobiosis, which means living without water.
Second, for all tardigrades to survive, they need to go
through a state called a barrel, for this process by rolling into a ball,
bending the head and the 8 legs inside their body, the tardigrades wait until
the water returns, protecting their components such as DNA. Proteins and
membranes from dryness get trapped inside your uterus.
Finally, once the body is rehydrated, the matrix dissolves, leaving
the cells in good condition and functional.
Being so resistant, tardigrades move and live on all
continents, including Antarctica, therefore we should not underestimate it just
because of its size.
Scientists are trying to discover the anti-drying method, to
help stabilize vaccines or to develop stress-tolerant crops that can cope with
Earth's climate changes.
